Participant Voices

  • “ I have been attending Day Hab at Good Shephard since 2018. I love being with my friends and staff. We volunteer at church and pantry every week. I love giving back to the community, it makes me feel good about myself. We go bowling, library, gym, park, beach, and the mall every week and sometimes we go on special trips like Coney Island and the Wax Museum in the city. Day Hab has helped me to be more patient with people and develop friendships”

  • I have been associated with The Good Shephard Inc. since 2011. I became very reclusive after I finished school. I needed help with socialization, travel training and skills. In the Day Hab program, I was the first participant and the staff worked with me 1:1 to learned computers and developed my art skills. When other participants were added to the program, I started to make friends. We did volunteer work at Food Pantries, cleaned up at the church. I worked with the Vacation Bible School for 5 years and that experience helped me to grow closer to God. I started to think about going to college and living on my own, so through the help and encouragement of the staff of Good Shephard I enrolled at Empire State College from 2013-2018 and earned my Associates in the Arts Degree. In 2018 I got my own apartment through the ISS Program. With the help of Community Hab Direct Care Staff that comes twice a week, I have learned to do laundry, grocery shopping, cleaning, and cooking on my own. I attend church regularly and have volunteered in the Audio/Video department on cameras. In 2022, I started doing volunteer work at a Thrift Store and now I am a permanent part time worker. I am very grateful to God, for all he has done for me and for all the people that he has put in my life to help!
